Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) is a govt owned corp of India situated in Mumbai in the state of Maharashtra. It is fully owned by the Central Government and is in charge for the creation of nuclear power for electricity. It is run by the Dept of Atomic Energy, Govt. of India (DAE). NPCIL was founded in September 1987 under the accordance of the Companies Act 1956, “with the idea of undertaking the operation, construction, design and maintenance of the atomic power stations for production of electricity in pursuance of the schemes and programs of the Govt of India under the terms of the Atomic Energy Act 1962.” All nuclear power plants which are run by the company are certified for ISO-14001(Environment Management System). NPCIL is the main body which is accountable for operating and constructing of India’s commercial nuclear power plants till the setting up of BHAVINI (Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam) in Oct 2003. The company had around 21 nuclear reactors in operation at 7 locations, and a total installed capacity of 5780 MWe as on 10th August 2012.
