Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited was generated in September 1987 under the Corporations Act 1956, “with the objective of undertaking the construction, operation, design and maintenance of the atomic power stations for generation of electricity in pursuance of the programmes and schemes of the Govt. of India under the provision of the Atomic Energy Act in the year 1962.”
Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited was the single body responsible for operating and constructing India’s commercial nuclear power plants till setting up of Bhavini (Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam) in October 2003. As of 10th August 2012 the corporation had twenty-one nuclear reactors in operation at 7 sites, a total installed capacity of 5780 MWe. Consequent to the government’s choice to allow private corporations to offer nuclear power, the corporation has experienced difficulties with private enterprises “poaching” its workers.
