National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) is a national-level endeavour to acknowledge and tap into students’ potential. Organized by a government body viz. National Council of educational research (NCERT), it’s considered to be one of the foremost prestigious exams. Approximately fifty lakh students apply for this scholarship examination every year, out of which one thousand scholarships are awarded. The scholarship is open solely to the students of Indian nationality and educational qualification above Class X, either residing in India or abroad.
The exams are conducted at 2 levels:
- Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)
The SAT level tests have multiple-choice questions, where out of 4 alternatives only one alternative is correct. However, it can have questions like matching, arrange the sequence, true & false statements and questions based on passages. The concept is to assess the reasoning ability and logical thinking of the candidates.
- Mental Ability Test (MAT)
It has a wide range of questions about variety of topics like analogies, block assembly, classification, coding-decoding, series, pattern perception, hidden figures, problem-solving, etc. Here, the motive is to determine the ability of reasoning, ability to evaluate, ability to visualize in space, spatial orientation, etc. of the candidates.

NTSE scholarship is deserved by the students who clear the second stage of exams with the marks above the cut-off limit prescribed. Moreover, parental income, government school, domicile, etc. are no restrictions with the NTSE Scholarship scheme. However, in case the student moves abroad for studies, the scholarship will not be provided.
About One thousand (1000) scholarships are awarded for different stages of education as follows:
- a) Scholarship of Rs.1250/- per month will be awarded for Class-XI to XII
- b) Scholarships of Rs.2000/- per month will be awarded for Undergraduates and Post graduates
- c) Scholarship amount for PhD will be fixed in accordance with the UGC norms
