Today, the Human Resource Development minister Mr. Prakash Javadekar has awarded the Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar 2018 to 52 schools from across the country. The event was organized as a part of the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ campaign launched by Prime Minister on 15 September 2018. Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi hosted the event and minister of state Satya Pal Singh was also present on the occasion of award distribution event. Secretary (School Education & Literacy), Ms. Rina Ray presented the welcome address at the award ceremony event.
Earlier, the Swachh Vidyalaya Puruskar was launched by the government of India in the year 2016 to recognize and confer the schools which have done the extraordinary work in the field of hygiene, sanitation and water. In the year 2019, over 6 lakh government, private and aided schools had registered to be qualified eligible for the honour called Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar.
Total 52 schools from across the country were conferred at the event. Of the 52 awardee schools, 15 schools are from urban areas and 37 schools are from rural areas. 7 schools are private and 45 are government/government aided schools. Further, 24 are elementary and 28 are secondary/higher secondary schools. The schools that have been awarded also include 2 Navodaya Vidyalayas and 5 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas. A few Indian states namely Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh were also awarded Certificate of Recognition for having maximum schools that were awarded. 9 districts, i.e. Pondicherry, Srikakulam, Chandigarh, Hisar, Karaikal, Latur, Nellore, South Goa, Vadodara, were also awarded Certificate of Recognition for maximum number of awardee schools.
The schools that have been awarded Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar from the HRD minister Mr. Prakash Javadekar will also be provided an additional school grant of Rs. 50,000 along with a Certificate of Recognition.
About Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar
The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India has started the Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar in the year 2016 under the program ‘Swachh Bharat Swachh Vidyalaya’ (SBSV). Through the Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar, the government recognizes, inspire and celebrate excellence in sanitation and hygiene practice in schools of India. The explicit purpose of the awards is to honour schools that have undertaken significant steps towards fulfilling the mandate of the Swachh Vidyalaya Campaign. The initiative taken by the HRD ministry has its emphasis on promoting safe and appropriate hygiene practices in schools and behavior among the school children.
