NOIDA– The Panjab University, Chandigarh has made an announcement that the admissions in MA Economics program will be given on the basis of entrance exam. Last year, the admission process was done on the basis of merit. The decision will be made effective from upcoming academic session i.e. 2019-20 onwards.

The pattern of this admission test is expected to remain same as the other entrance exams for admission in various PG Courses at the varsity. There will 75 objective type questions and the time given to solve the same would be 90 minutes. Each right answer will earn 1 mark for the examinees. There will be a negative marking of 0.4 per wrong answer.

The day-long meeting was headed by Senate, the Panjab University governing body and the proposal was conveyed by the department of economics for approval. Senate green lit the proposal.

A senior faculty from Department of Economics informed the reporters that MA Economics is one of the most popular courses at Panjab University. The varsity has a seat intake capacity of 80 and over 12,000 applications were received for the same, which is expected to go higher this year. In such context, merit is troublesome.

While the Senate member, professor (emeritus), PU said, “This is a good proposal to give equal chance to all the applicants. Panjab University receives thousands of applications from all across the nation for MA Economics. Different colleges and universities have different marking system & benchmarks and assessing the knowledge of two students from different institutions through merit is not at all fair. Through entrance exam, all students will be given equal chance to show their skills.”

The entrance exam syllabus will consist of the topics from BA (honours) and BA economics courses of Panjab University.

According to sources, the entrance test question paper will be designed with 10 questions from each economic topic- microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, and Indian economics. The process will be made effective from the next academic year i.e. 2019-20
