NOIDA, 8th Sep 2018 – On Thursday, Panjab University got its first women president as Kanupriya, the candidate from Students for Society (SFS) – a left-leaning party, defeated her nearest rival from the AVBP Ashish Rana by 719 votes. This is the first time in the history of the university a woman had taken up the position of the president.
She created history by defeating the five male candidates from Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (AVBP), Students Organisation of India (SOI), National Students of India (NSUI), Panjab University Students Union (PUSU), and Panjab Students Union (Lalkaar)
Kanupriya, 22, created a record by gaining 2,802 votes against her rival Ashish Rana who could register only 2,083 votes. He is from the University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) whereas Kanupriya is a member of left learning student wing Students for Society (SFS).
Over 15,000 students voted on Thursday to elect the four – office bearers of the Panjab University Campus Students (PUCSC). But the university administration showed their failure to penalize the candidates of AVBP who tried to challenge the election rules.
Pawan Kumar, Kanupriya’s father is a businessman and mother Chandar Sudha Rani is a nurse. She has completed her schooling from Sacred Heart School, Taran Tarn and currently, she is pursuing M.SC, second year. She joined Panjab University in 2014 as a student of Zoology department.
Daler Singh, a geology student from the Indian Students Association (ISA), won the vice-president position, with 3,155 votes. Similarly, Amarinder Singh won the position of secretary is from Indian National Students Organisation (INSO). The joint secretary post was won by Vipul Atray with 2,357 votes. He was representing his candidature from National Students’ Union of India (NSUI).
A total of 21 candidates were fighting for the posts of president, vice- president, general secretary, and joint secretary including a girl candidate from SFS wherein the NSUI, PSU Lalkaar and SFS were the only parties who was fighting solely without making alliance with any other party while SFS and PSU Lalkaar had given the names for the presidential candidates.
Panjab University Campus Student Council (PUCSU) election saw the voters marking “None of the Above (NOTA)” as their option. This option was introduced in the year 2016 where the voters have the right to disapprove all of the candidates in the fray. Around 209 students opted for NOTA option for the president’s post.
