Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi organized its 6th convocation ceremony in the humble presence of luminaries, eminent faculty, students and their parents. The degrees to 211 students conferred, including 40 researchers. 112 B.Tech. students, 20 M.Tech students, 11 M.Sc Mathematics students, 28 M.Sc Chemistry students, 11 M.S., and 29 Ph.D. scholars received their degree in the convocation ceremony. In a statement issued by the IIT Mandi, this year the number of researchers increased to 40 compared to 31 (PhD-24, M.S. – 7) previous year.
Hon’ble Prime Minister of India congratulated all the graduates with best wishes for their bright future. He also mentioned that even after being one of the newest IITs in India, IIT Mandi has concreted its identity as one of the premier institution for engineering education and research across the globe.
Padma Shri Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Institute Professor, IIT Madras conveyed the motivational words to the students and mentioned that today’s graduates are the most fortunate since India is growing at a pace like never before. And, today’s graduates will pay a pivotal role in the success of tomorrow.
India is in a transitional phase and all the students graduating today will be entering directly in this phase. The knowledge and skills gained by the students at IIT Mandi will definitely help them make a difference for a better tomorrow. The introduction of the technologies like Robotics, 3D-manufacturing, nano-materials will transform the country. The abilities and craving to learn & adapt new things will definitely help you pave your way towards a bright future. He concluded this speech in this fashion.
IIT Mandi houses the avant-garde academic and research facilities with a fully equipped residential campus in a very short span of time.
Prof. Timothy A. Gonsalves, Director, IIT Mandi, while providing the annual report, said, “In 2018, 193 B.Tech., 79 M.Sc., 110 M.Tech., and 13 M.A. students secured admission to IIT Mandi. We now have a total of 1,276 students including 274 Ph.D., 46 M.S. and 17 I-Ph.D. Research Scholars. In the 2017-18 placement season, 58 companies visit our campus at Kamand, which is the highest ever at our Institute till now. Among these companies more than 83 per cent were core companies.”
In IIT Mandi, 2018 proved significant in terms of a remarkable hike in the number of total funding and sponsored research projects. The total sanctioned amount is over Rs. 80 Cr while 182 is the number that denotes sanctioned projects.
Publication of 92 peer-reviewed articles during the Academic Year 2017-18 testifies the excellence of IIT Mandi researchers. The number of research papers published by IIT Mandi researchers in national and international journals has reached 12,71 till March 2018.
“A large number of IIT Mandi faculty also visited institutions in Europe, North America, Australia, South Asia and Latin America in 2017-18 for conferences, industry and academic collaborations. Faculty members also visited TU9 institutions in Germany in 2018 under BMBF-IIT Mandi faculty exchange program. Besides international students, more than 35 international faculty members visited IIT Mandi,” said Prof Gonsalves.
IIT Mandi currently operates four schools- The School of Computing and Electrical Engineering, The School of Basic Sciences, The School of Engineering, and The School of Humanities and Social Sciences. These schools are established with a vision to equip the students with multidimensional skills.
