NOIDA– Board of Governors (BoG) at IIT-Kanpur denied complying with Senate’s recommendation to revoke the PhD thesis of a Dalit teacher. Last year, this teacher filed a complaint against four colleagues for harassing him.
Instead looking into the matter and penalizing the accused, the board designated Abhay Karandikar to constitute a committee of external technical experts for examining the dissertation of the complainant. Now the decision will be made on the basis of external committee report.
The development in the case was recorded after the MHRD opposed the IIT Kanpur Senate’s recommendation and HRD Ministry supported the decision of IIT-K of penalizing Subrahmanyam Sadrela as per UGC norms for plagiarism.
Om March 14, the IIT Kanpur Senate was held and a decision was taken to cancel the PhD thesis of Subrahmanyam Sadrela who is deputed as a teacher in Department of Aerospace Engineering, IIT Kanpur after he alleged his colleagues for plagiarism, although the institute’s Academic Ethics Cell found “no reason to revoke the thesis”.
The plagiarism charges against Sadrela were enacted in response to an email sent to most of the faculty members on 15th October 2018. After two months, a panel of high court judges declared the four teachers guilty of harassing Sardela and violating the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act and the conduct rules of IIT-K.
