Noida: The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have made a collective request to the government to allow the IIMs to confer one-year management program degree, as per the official reports.
This week, a meeting was held between the IIM directors and the secretary of higher education. During the meeting, the most prestigious b-schools of India conveyed their availability and possibility of awarding one-year postgraduate course degrees to executives.
On 8th March, the HRD ministry, in order to take action to reinforce UGC act, issued an order to all the 20 IIMs across the country. This order clearly mentioned that all IIMs need to grant permission from government to run a course which doesn’t comply with the UGC notification.
This order completely ruled out the probability of IIMs offering any 1-year post graduate degree program for working professionals since UGC clearly notifies that a master’s degree in management or any other stream should be of two years duration. HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar reiterated this clause while attending a meeting with all the IIM directors.
“It’s not an ‘us versus them’ situation. We have sensitised the ministry about what the IIMs want and we’re hoping they will reconsider their stand,” an IIM Director said and wished to keep his identity anonymous.
This meeting was conducted on the sidelines of Pan IIM World Management Conference. Along with the permission for 1-year post graduate degree, the IIMs also requested the government to revise the eligibility criteria specified for the doctoral programs offered at IIMs.
Right now, candidates with four-year degree or B.Tech a Cumulative Grade Points Average (CGPA) of 8 are eligible for the direct entry- the b-schools want the government to reconsider this clause. IIMs want the government to revise the required CGPA to 6. More to it, the institutes are also keen to get the permission to take admission of the candidates with one year PG diploma as opposed to the government prescribed two-year diploma requirement.
In October, all the IIMs received a letter from UGC clarifying that the students with a four-year bachelor’s degree will be eligible to take admission in PhD program directly. The duration of doctoral program for such candidates is 4 years fixed and they need to earn the 4-year degree with at least 8 CGPA to become eligible for direct admission.
The candidates having 2 years PG diploma, master’s degree or a professional qualification such as CA/CS/ ICWA with B.Com are eligible for three-year doctoral program at IIMs currently.
