Indian Institute of Management-Indore has chosen a candidate who possess hardly 10 years of experience as a professor to become the new director after R T Krishnan.
As per the sources, on October 31, the Board of Governors (BoG), headed by Deepak M Satwalekar, have discussed about four names that were given by search-cum-selection committee for the post of director from which Himanshu Rai from IIM-Lucknow was appointed for the top job.
Sougata Ray, a professor of strategic management at IIM-Calcutta, Arindam Banerjee of IIM-Ahmedabad and Neharika Vohra and the professor of organizational behavior at IIM-Ahmedabad were also in the race to get the post of director.
Those who were the directors of IIM in the past have served for minimum 10 years as professors. Not only this, the draft regulations under IIM Act, that are presently being prepared by the HRD Ministry, demands for the professorship of at least 10 years to become eligible for the post of director.
When asked about the matter, Satwalekar did not respond to the issue.
According to the new IIM Act, that became effective on January 31, the Board is accountable for selecting the director of IIM who was earlier chosen by the Union government. The clarity is required on the issue of appointment of director ignoring the Rules under the IIM Act that asks for the experience of at least 10 years as professor.
The notification given by IIM-Indore for applying for the post of director does not contain any kind of minimum qualification for this position. Only the age limit is described which should be less than 60 years as on the end date of application that is September 4.
There was a case in IIM-Amritsar where three names given by the selection committee were scrapped owing to the fact that two of them did not carry the professorship experience of minimum 10 years.
Himanshu Rai has completed his Phd from IIM-Ahmedabad and was posted as a dean of the India campus of SDA Bocconi School of Management in Milan from September 2014 to August 2016. Not only this, he has written three books. Being the convenor of CAT or Common Admission Test 2010, he effectively led the shift of the examination from offline to online mode. He will be joining the post of Director in IIM-Indore after the end of tenure of Krishnan in December.
