HRD Ministry appoints DU professor Bidyut Chakraborty

Noida 10th October 2018: Delhi University professor Bidyut Chakraborty has been selected by the HRD Ministry to fill the post of the vice chancellor of Visva-Bharati, as per the official reports. The ministry has taken this initiative to put full stop at the intricacies that the central university campus in Shanti Niketan West Bengal has been undergoing since the year 2016. It is an honorable thing for the university as well as Prof Bidyut Chakraborty to be appointed at this reputable position.

In the year 2007, Chakraborty, DU professor, was involved in a sexual harassment row which had laid an adverse impact on his reputation and thus was not considered apt for the topmost position at Delhi University. However, later on, he was relieved from such charges and accusations and was given the clean chit.

The central university which was established by Rabindranath Tagore has been running without any top management since 2016 when Sushanta Duttagupta, the then Vice Chancellor, was removed from the position of VC by Smriti Irani, the then HRD Minister, on the basis of irregularities.

As per the sources, “The President has imparted his consent for the appointment of Bidyut Chakraborty as the Vice Chancellor of the university. The official announcement or order for the same will soon be issued.”

Ram Nath Kovind, the president, had earlier rejected a list of names that was proposed by HRD Ministry of Prakash Javadekar for the post of VC.

After this, there was the appointment of new selection panel and fresh names were given to head the university.

The newly selected VC of Visva-Bharati, Bidyut Chakraborty teaches at the Department of Political Science in Delhi University and has also pursued Ph.D from London School of Economics.

As per the reports, Chakraborty stated that he was not aware of the information regarding his appointment as the top most position of VC in Visva-Bharati yet.
