It will be going to be a great day for Karthiyani Amma who has topped the literacy exam at the age of 96 and will get the merit certificate. She has attained 98 percent marks in the paper, as per the sources.
This 96-year-old lady has aced the qualifying class IV exam that was organized by Kerala Literacy Mission Authority. On November 1, she will be invited at Conference Hall of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan where the merit certificate will be awarded to her.
The exam was held in Kerala state and there were five levels of class IV, VII, X, XI, and XII. There were total 42,933 candidates who have qualified the exam. Karthiyani Amma belongs to the Muttom village in Alappuzha.
Amma has never gone to school in her entire life. She worked like a cleaning staff in some temples of the village. She attained incredible 98 marks out of 100.
The director of the Literacy Mission Authority, PS Sreelatha quoted, “She is indeed the topper among the neo-literates qualifying exam. We all are elated and proud for this achievement of hers. She had joined the classes voluntarily.”
Apart from clearing this exam with highest marks at the age of 96, she also became the oldest applicants giving this exam. The students who have given this exam were assessed on the basis of the skills like writing, reading and mathematics.
Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority has started the project named ‘Aksharalaksham’ on Republic Day, 2018 according to which they give training to 47,241 illiterates to attain 100 percent literacy rate in Kerala state.
Karthiyani Amma was extremely happy with this success and achievement of topping the exam with 98 marks. She further added that now she knows very well how to read, write and calculate. There are various personalities including the chairman of Mahindra Group, Anand Mahindra and Union Tourism Minister Alphons Kannanthanam who have showered their applauds on her through social media.
