6 Teachers and 7 Students of Manipur University to be remanded through Judicial Custody

Noida 24th September 2018: On Thursday midnight, Manipur Police arrested about six teachers and 89 students in a raid at the campus of Manipur University. Next day, as per the announcement of remand by the city magistrate, seven students and six teachers were taken under legal custody for 15 days and two students were taken under police custody for 5 days. Apart from six teachers and 13 students, rest all was released on Friday night.

The other students came forward in protest and 10 were reportedly injured when police used mock bombs and tear gas to control the mob. The raid followed by the arrests of the teachers and students were the result of an FIR that was filed by K Yungindro, newly elected Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the university.

Three days later the suspension of the university Vice Chancellor Prof AP Pandey by HRD Ministry, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor K Yugindro and registrar in-charge Shyamkesho headed to take the charge of the post when the protests began against them by Manipur University Students’ Union and Manipur University Teachers’ Association. Following this incident, an FIR was lodged against the teachers and students at Singjamei police station.

The charges like attempt to murder, wrongful confinement etc was registered against them under IPC sections 365/342/307/506.

Joint Students’ Co-ordinating Committee (JSCC) which consists of four student entities like All Manipur Students’ Union, Kangleipak Students’ Association, Manipur Students’ Federation and Students’ Union of Kangleipak has made the announcement of complete shutdown of the university until the situation gets normalized.

After the incident took place, the police security is quite high in the university campus and the academic activities are halted for the time being.

Criticizing the infringement of heavy police force inside the Manipur University campus and also the hostels, JSCC has warned the HRD Ministry and State Government for mass agitation if they won’t act as per the MoA with the university.

JSCC convenor, Ng. Milan said that the Chief Minister of Manipur will be blamed for the untoward situation that may arise if their demands will not get handled. They want the instant release of the students and teachers arrested by the police.

He further added that the appointment of a pro vice-chancellor by AP. Pandey for the mean time when he is on leave is actually the violation of the MoA that was signed in front of the Chief Minister, N. Biren Singh. He also quoted that such kinds of tactics by Pandey won’t work and JSCC will not bear all this.
