The Maharashtra Housing Board previously called “Bombay Housing Board” was constituted in the year 1948 and had a jurisdiction over the whole State of Maharashtra except Vidharbha region. This body undertook construction of residential structures under various housing schemes for different sections of the society. The maintenance and allotment of these structures was being looked after by it. On the re-organization of the State, the Vidharbha Housing Board was founded in the year 1960 as an inheritor body to the one-time MP Housing Board. Its functions were alike to those of the MHB, apart from that it also advanced loan to local authorities, co-operative housing societies and institutes for the building of houses.

The Bombay Buildings Reconstruction and Maintenances Board were established in the year 1971. MHADA was created to deal with the difficulties faced by tenants residing in run-down buildings in the Island City of Bombay and undertook its structural maintenances and reconstruction, so as to make them structurally safe and sound for habitation.

Recently MHADA (MAHARASHTRA HOUSING AND AREA DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY) has come out with a low cost housing scheme providing 2,593 apartments in Mira Road and Mumbai in its May 2012 Lottery Scheme.
