Maharashtra board lagging behind CBSE and ICSE

According to the survey organized by the NCERT last year, the Maharashtra board students score meager 246 of the total 400 on sciences which place Maharashtra at the bottom.

After Haryana board, which has been covering behind CBSE and ICSE in terms of students learning quality, the Maharashtra Education Board has also been badly performing, according to latest National Achievement survey. Recent results from the survey shows Maharashtra board in a deprived light lagging behind the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE).

The inadequately existing program within the Maharashtra board has encouraged a serious dispute on whether the Maharashtra board will participate in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) which is due for 2018.

What prompted the debate?

According to the survey organized by the NCERT last year, the Maharashtra board students achieve meager 246 of the total 400 in sciences which place Maharashtra at the bottom of the five boards namely, Maharashtra Board, Karnataka Board, CBSE and ICSE.

It has been approved that students of Maharashtra board should improve the performance of its students to associate with other national boards before participating in the international students assessment.

Many other academicians blame Maharashtra board for lacking in application-oriented curriculum in the learning process.

“Over the next 3 years, we would commence introducing these reforms in our education system. Our focus will be to make sure that state board students also score above 300 out of 400 in the next national achievement survey,” said Mr Nanda Kumar (I.A.S), Secretary of the state, Maharashtra.

Some academicians pointed out that instead of engaging in traditional learning throughout the seasons, students must be confident to think out-of-the-box which enhances the creativity and learning capacity of the students.

“The ICSE board encourages children to think. They get marks for giving their views instead of just reproducing lines from textbooks,” said Sonu Arora, principal of Gundecha Education Academy, Kandivli.
