Its important to have an idea about the GMAT Exam Pattern prior to applying for the examination! All questions have 5 options to answer and you will need to choose one of these 5 answers as the correct one. The next question appears only after you have answered the previous question and hence you cannot skip any questions. You also do not have the liberty to go back to a previously answered question in case you change your mind regarding your previous answer. The level of difficulty of your next question depends on how well or how correct you answer the existing question.
The exam has 3 different sections.
- Analytical Writing Ability (AWA)
The Quantitative section has 2 subsections – Problem Solving & Data Efficiency mixed throughout the section.
The verbal section has 3 subsections – Reading Comprehension, Critical Reasoning & Sentence Correction with questions from each of these subsections are in no set sequence.
Each section has a time limit of 75 minutes and there are in total 78 questions with 37 in quantitative & remaining 41 in verbal. There will be 2 essays in addition to the 78 questions. Thus, in about 4 approximate hours, the GMAT exam is to be completed.
Analytical Writing Assessment
Here, you are asked to write / type 2 essays. One essay is based on an issue & the other essay is based on an argument. What critical here is not your linguistic skills but the analysis and your logical point of view of the topic in simple English.
The computer will give you a 5 minute break irrespective of you completing the essays earlier than the 60 minutes times given.
The 37 questions are based on Problem Solving (PS) and Data Sufficiency (DS). There is no specific break of the two but is has been observed that there are around 20 PS and 17 DS questions. The section tests your level of Mathematics equivalent to Class 10 exams, with questions on Probability, Area & Volume of 2-D and 3-D figures , , Algebra (including Quadratic Equations), Geometry (including Basic Coordinate Geometry), Number Systems, Ratio & Proportion, Percentages, Fractions & Decimals. Questions may be asked beyond these topics as well.
In Data Sufficiency each problem comprises a question followed by two statements, which may or may not lead to the answer to the given question. This is what you need to assimilate – whether the given statements can be used to answer the question or not, and if so, whether the statements can be used independently or in conjunction. Each of the five answer options present five probabilities that arise in this case, and one needs to apply basic principles of mathematics with a strong logical reasoning to get the answer right.
The verbal section tests the basic skills of correct English along with reasoning and analysis. The 41 questions consist of 3 types: Sentence Correction (SC), Critical Reasoning (CR), & Reading Comprehension (RC). The 3 types are mixed, with no fixed number for each type. The break-up of questions among SC, CR, and RC could be 14-14-13 or 15-13-13, or any such combination.
The GMAT exam results comprise of four different scores: a total score (which is the combined verbal and quantitative scores), a separate Verbal score, a separate Quantitative score, and an Analytical writing score. The total score is reported on a scale from 200 to 800. The Verbal and Quantitative Scores are reported on a scale of 0 to 60. For the AWA score, the scale is from 0 to 6. Please note that the AWA performance is not reflected in your total GMAT score (on 800). You will get to know your total score of verbal and quantitative immediately after taking the test. Official GMAT scores including the AWA scores are mailed approximately two weeks after you take the test and take another two weeks to reach your address.
