GATE 2017 Exam Pattern

GATE 2017 Exam Pattern has undergone a major change after 2014, from 2015 the score of GATE will be acceptable for next three years and pattern, marking scheme has also undergone many changes. GATE exam is conducted for 100 marks whereas some papers are for less than 100 marks, in total 65 questions would be asked each question can be either for 1 or 2 marks each. The whole paper would consist of Multiple Choice Questions & Numerical Question; exam also follows Negative Pattern for the exam depending on marks of question deduction changes. For all paper except few 15 marks of paper would be covered by General Aptitude Sections & remaining 85 marks paper would be devoted to the subject of the paper. Exam pattern hugely varies for few subjects like Life Sciences, Engineering Sciences & Geology and Geophysics.

Method followed for Marking:

  1. Paper would be divided in 2 section viz. General Aptitude & Paper (out of 23 mentioned above)
  2. General Aptitude is mandatory for all students where as paper (out of 23 mentioned above) would be as per student’s choice.
  3. Paper would comprise of Multiple Choice Questions & Numerical Questions for 1 marks as well as 2 marks
  4. Negative marking is followed only for Multiple Choice Questions
  5. Pattern of negative marking is as:

1/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer of 1 mark question

2/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer of 2 marks question

  1. Numerical will have no options and the answers for the question would be real number only.
  2. MCQ’s will have one or more correct answer and candidate is suppose to answer all possible right number

GATE 2017 Exam Pattern For Asterisk Mark Papers

Exam pattern for Geology and Geophysics:

  • This will be divided in 2 sections viz. Part A and Part B
  • Part A will be compulsory for everyone it will be of 25 questions for 1 marks
  • Part B will be for Geology or Geophysics, here candidate can choose any one; it would contain 30 questions for 2 marks each

Exam pattern for XE Paper:

This paper would be divided in 2 sections Part A will be compulsory and part B will have some options depending on students choice any 2 are to be selected he can select any one.
