WBJEE will be for 8.5 hr on 17th of May a weekday.

The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination 2016 for engineering and medical students is scheduled to be conducted on the 17th of May 2016. Turns out that for the very first time its held on a weekday in order to ensure that there is no clash with the impending Assembly elections that are expected anytime from the 1st of April to the 15th of May 2016. Though for those 45,000 odd candidates who will be appearing for both the streams it will be an eight and half hour ordeal.

This particular announcement was made via the WBJEE board chairman Sajal Dasgupta on Monday.

Up till now the practice was to hold the biological science test on a Saturday and the Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics tests on Sunday. Dasgupta claimed the board wasn’t able to slot the exams over the span of a weekend in May as all the slots had already been taken for other competitive examinations like CLAT, JEE (Advance) and AIPMT.

Dasgupta stated that “Nearly 300 educational institutions need to be engaged to conduct WBJEE 2016 throughout the state. So many centres may not be available due to the Assembly polls that could be held anytime between April 1 and May 15. These centres will then be required for the poll process. Hence, we had no option but to select a weekday. Since schools will have to be blocked, we did not want to inconvenience students for two days,” as an explanation.

The various boards that do conduct school-level examinations such Madhyamik, Higher Secondary, ICSE, ISC and CBSE (class X and XII) etc. have already agreed to conclude these tests by April 20 to avoid a clash with Assembly polls. In fact, Madhyamik and Higher Secondary examinations have been advanced to early February.

According to the WBJEE schedule the test for the biological science which is for 150 marks will be conducted from 9.00 am uptill 11.30 am which will then be followed by those of Chemistry and Physics which comprises of 50 marks each from 12.45 pm till 2.45 pm. The Mathematics test which comprises of 100 marks will be from 3.30 pm to 5.30 pm.

Since so many tests are being crammed into a single day, the WBJEE board has decided to reduce the number of questions in various categories. Dasgupta also added that “Weightage awarded in each section and total number of multiple-choice-questions (MCQs) has also undergone some change. The details are available on our website.”

Incidentally, engineering and medical JEE were held on the same day from 2010 to 2013 but always on a weekend.
