Calcutta High Court is one of the oldest high courts which is present in India. It was founded as the High Court of Judicature at Fort William on the 1st July 1862 under the High Courts Act, 1861. It has its command over the state of West Bengal and the Union Territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The High Court building’s design is on the basis of the Cloth Hall, Ypres, in Belgium. The court has a total judge strength of 63 judges. Inspite the name of the city being officially changed from Calcutta to Kolkata in 2001, the old name is still kept by the court as it is an institution. On 5th July 2016 the bill to rename it as Kolkata High Court was approved by the Cabinet alongside rename of its two other counterparts in Chennai and Mumbai.
